In point of fact, when a prisoner gets left alone in isolation for a period of time, they have time to reflect on themselves. They now have a chance to see the errors that they may have made in their lives and change their character to make themselves a better person (“Should Jails, Prisons Use Solitary Confinement?”). Strictly speaking, solitary confinement will change a very dangerous person into a better one. Furthermore, once the prisoner is placed in solitary confinement they won’t want to be put back there. Once out of solitary, the prisoner will try everything they can not to go back, which ultimately makes them a better person (“FRONTLINE”). It has been proven that long periods of isolation and loneliness can cause major mental disorders like schizophrenia (Hadro). It has also been proven that prisoners that have been to solitary confinement have sometimes committed suicide while in it or when they get out of it (Hadro). These claims can be debunked because most of the people that are said to have gotten mental disorders in solitary have already had some before they got there (Metzner). This means that solitary confinement doesn’t always cause a prisoner to get a mental disorder. In addition, the better you behave while in solitary confinement the less you have to stay in solitary confinement (Chammah). This is saying that if you behave well while in solitary, you have a less of a chance to develop a mental disorder. This makes it very clear that solitary confinement is not the real reason why people are developing mental disorders and also they can be prevented by the inmate if they behave well enough. Ultimately, solitary confinement will continue to keep people safe, change a person’s character, and help the guards discipline the prisoners. By keeping solitary confinement a viable technique, it will be what is best for not only the public but also the rest of the United States. If it is terminated the crime rates will never drop and
