Confidentiality is not something that should be taken lightly the lives of the people you serve are at stake for being divulged and that is something that can be avoided by being proactive and securing your documents and upholding confidentiality. As a counselor you are responsible for protecting our client information per the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics B.6.b. says “Confidentiality of Records and Documentation Counselors ensure that records and documentation kept in any medium are secure and that only authorized persons have access to them (ACA, 2014). It is important for all counselors to consider a child’s confidentiality and know that most states, such a Texas allow parents have the right to access their child’s records.

Although I don’t have much counseling experience I believe that I possess excellent listening and speaking skills when working with this young man. Advocacy plays a major part in substance abuse counseling, as we provide guidance and support to a chemically dependent person. This is also a strength that I exhibit when working with all clients. I will continue to strengthen my professional identity I plan to educate others, as well as seeking additional training which will help me to advanced my skills and knowledge of substance abuse
