After reviewing the FLSA’s definition of professionals, one could argue that we as athletic trainers do not always have the ability to exercise discretion and/ or judgement. Relating what we’ve learned in pharmacology to this matter, the text clearly states that anytime there are medications stored in an athletic training facility, there must be a licensed physician who accepts responsibility for the medications. Furthermore, the dispensing and administering of medications is considered a discretionary decision in which only a physician is allowed to dispense or administer medications. Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach.
