Confidence

According to The Free Dictionary by Farlex, confidence has several meaning depending

on the context it is used in. One of the meanings of the word confidence is the belief or the

conviction that the results will be favorable. The word confidence can also be used to mean the

belief in the effectiveness of a person’s abilities or in a person’s favorable acceptance by others.

The word originates from the 15 th Century and it was derived from two Latin words:

The word confidence can be used differently when used together with other words like

self-confidence and over-confidence. Self-confidence is a feeling of belief in one’s abilities,

judgment, and qualities. For example, there is a story told about one executive who was in deep

debt and he could not figure out a way out. Suppliers were demanding for payments and

creditors were closing in on him. He sat on a park bench as he wondered if there was anything he

could do to save his company from bankruptcy. Suddenly he was approached by an old man. “I

can tell there is something that is stressing you,” said the old man.

After the old man listened to the woes of the executive, he said, “I may be in a position to

help you.” The old man asked the executive his name, wrote out a check, and gave it to

debts, he decided to keep the check uncashed thinking that the feeling of knowing that he has

money would give him the strength and the ability to find a way to save his business.

With renewed optimism, he made better negotiations in deals and he extended the terms

of payment. He was able to close great sales and within a few months, he was able to pay off all

his debts and was now making profits. At the agreed day and time, he returned to the park with

his uncashed check. The old man was there and just as the executive business man was about to

give the check to the old man and tell him about his success, a nurse came running and grabbed

the old man. “I’m so happy I caught him!” she cried. “I really hope he has not been troubling

you. He’s constantly escaping from the others and telling everyone that he is John D.

Rockefeller.” And she walked the old man away by the arm.

The surprised executive stood there, shocked. Throughout the year he had been
