Confession “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned,” I began slowly, “It has been two months since my last confession,” picking up the pace as the familiar rhythm and motions overcame the meaning of the words. Recalling the familiar script, I recited the words to the beige screen that separated me from the priest. My eye stared ahead blankly, and my mind wandered to the beginning of an ache forming in my knees. As the script came to an end, I shifted my weight, hoping to stave off the coming discomfort. Between the rehearsed and improvised, silence hung in the air. “Frank? Are there any sins you’d like to confess?” Father David asked, his voice tinged with impatience. “Y-yeah, a few,” I muttered, still weighing the benefits of confessing …show more content…
I can only absolve you for what you tell me,” he quipped from behind the fabric screen, his voice detached and uninterested. “I’ve lied,” I began, unsure of the lies being confessed, but I continued, certain that there must have been something. “I made up an excuse for homework,” I guessed, still not positive if the confession was for something remembered or imagined, “but really, I’m just lazy, I think,” I added onto the end, hoping the half-baked self-awareness would constitute contrition for the unspoken sins. “Well, since you said that the last time we spoke, I can only assume you’ve failed to complete your penance,” the invisible judgmental voice said from behind the division. “Or, as we’ve discussed before, you’re lying in the confessional,” he continued, recalling the previous discussions held in this room: lessons on the sanctity of confession, the confidentiality of confessions, and the importance of completing my penance. “Yes, Father,” I conceded, again shifting my knees, hoping for some form of comfort as guilt settled onto my shoulders. “I just don’t know how to do this,” I sighed, gesturing around myself to the unseeing party. I knew what I wanted to say, but the fear was outweighing benefits of

When it comes to guilt we can either: face it and overcome it or repent and dwell. In the excerpt from the autobiographical narrative by Gary Soto, the author uses vivid imagery, allusions to religion, and change in tone to recreate his experiences from his six-year-old self. Soto begins by involving the reader into the excitement that he feels while glaring at the freshly baked pies, he then vividly represents how he transgresses his valued religious principle, and steals the pie. He concludes by illustrating the aftermath, and describing the remorse that he underwent after realizing he had given into a reprehensible temptation.…

I must confess, if the importance of this document did not extend further than a personal confession to the worst of my sins, I would not be wasting my time. However, I have come to realize, that without a written record of my actions, there will be no safeguard against these disgusting acts in the future. I do not write in this document for my own therapeutic benefit: I realize that the acts I have orchestrated can never be forgiven. I suppose my true transformation began thirty years ago; at this time, I was a young man living in the London Corridor: careless, deprived, and unusually free. At this time, the blistering remnants of public education were being beset by the party’s influence, but despite cultural turmoil, I graduated in the…

“Within the first 100 years of the Europeans landing in the Americas, nine-tenths of the natives died out because of diseases the Europeans brought with them, such as smallpox and the plague. Corn, chocolate, and hemp were some goods that the Europeans got from the Americas. Most Spanish men were obsessed with three things: Gold, God, and Glory. To obtain these things, they had to go to the Americas. Hernan Cortes, a Spaniard, heard about El Dorado and went to Mexico in 1519 to find it.…

Today is going to be just like any other day, I sketched in my morning journal. The morning Baltimore sun shone past the skyscrapers of downtown, and light protruded through the silk blinds that covered half of the picture window in my room. I rose up from my queen bed. The sheets had become untucked and the comforter lay halfway off the edge. My back rested against the mahogany headboard with my head fitting perfectly between two of the wooden posts.…

Graverobber reached into the cooler beside him, pulling out a can of soda. He popped it open with just his thumb and brought it to his lips. “I’m younger than most of the vampires here,” He said, sipping down the drink. “I was born in the year 1858, on April 15th. The name my parents gave me was ‘John Patrick Nolan’, and sometimes my father called me, ‘Jack’ for short,” Graverobber sat the can down; and he adjusted himself so he could hold his son in a more comfortable position.…
