The true gospel, for all who are saved, it is the epitome of graciousness and joy in our lives. For those who are lost in darkness, a false gospel they have chosen blinds their eyes. And this where biblical counseling and the true gospel intersect. When a person chooses a gospel to believe in, he or she is choosing to define what he or she sees as needs, how those needs will be met in their life and the way in which he or she can go about having those needs met. This is called confessional theology. Therefore, if all have a gospel, then they must exercise faith in it. The best way to see the pitfalls in a person’s false gospel or incorrect view of the true gospel is to learn more about a correct view of functional theology. The functional gospel is different than that of the confessional gospel. The functional gospel’s main point is how to live a life based upon one’s confessional theology. A true functional gospel speaks to people in all walks of life. Whether a husband, wife, child, father, slave, or master a biblical functional gospel applies. The need, as Christians, is to emulate God in all areas of life. As well, there are specific sub-points to this need for each of the categories previously listed. Now, how can this need be provided for? A correct view of functional theology shows that the Holy Spirit has come to be our helper. As well, the armor of God is also provided for the Christian to fulfill the need of a life fully dedicated to glorifying God. How this provision of the need is realized is nothing less than faith. Faith in God that He has given us all we need for life and godliness. The consequences? A true functional theology will cause a person to become more and more like Christ and to be exhibiting the fruits of the Spirit in their daily lives.
