Southern pride and heritage from a hard fought battle against the Union? The fight to keep slavery in place and keep the whites as the dominant race? The Civil war was fought between the north and the south almost solely based on the topic of slavery. Which influences most people to believe that the flag represents racism. Last year, a man by the name of Dylann Roof walked into a Charleston Church, sat for an hour, then proceeded to kill nine African Americans. Dylann spoke and said that the Confederate flag is what influenced him to kill those innocent people(Coates, 2015). Most of the Confederate flag’s defenders often claim the flag represents heritage not hate. On one point of view, the people want to keep the Confederate flag because it symbolizes the rich history of the south and the deaths it endured for the fight of what they believed was right. However, the other side wanted the flag taken away from society because of the racial implications the flag had on them, considering the south was fighting to keep slavery in place while the north wanted nothing to do with implications. I understand the south wanting to keep the flag because of their heritage and the people taken from them seeking what they believed was their rights. However, the other side is more convincing because of the fact of slavery and the pain and suffering that race has endured in their history. If we stand by and let this flag continue to exist, then the black community will strike back in a way that the American people are not expecting, and lead us into a war that we are not prepared for.
