The Civil War started because of an uncompromising economical and social difference with the North and the South and the South leaving the Union in which the union did not like at all. The Union when the South tried to leave the Union was upset and the South just didn’t like being told what to do. So the South decided to just make their own country and break off of the Union. An example of why the South left was, “States’ Rights refers To the struggle between the federal government and individual states over political power” (Historynet 1). This was meaning that the federal government's power could just overrule the state in power and rights. The South did not like this idea at all because they wanted to make their own laws and because Lincoln was elected president and hes was Republican and most of the South was Democrat they knew a lot of their rights would be taken or changed. This brings me to my second point which is the election of the Republican president Abraham Lincoln. Because most of the South’s population was in favor of the democrats in the 1860 presidential election they did not want Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, to take presidency and be bias against the South. “Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but handily defeated the three other candidates: Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge…” (History
