Confederate Flag Argument Essay

The second article I found is called, “Teaching Students How to Think Critically: The Confederate Flag Controversy in the High School Social Studies Classroom” and the author’s name is Susan L. Schramm-Pate. The article could help my paper because in my outline I need to talk about how the flag is seen in schools. The article is about how the students perceive the flag and what it means to them after they have learned about its history and how it affects people now. The source is most likely reliable because at the end it has footnotes that give the reader some more information about where some of the information in the article came from to make it more credible. It also says that the article originated from The University of North Carolina Press. The article has amazing information that will benefit my paper immensely. The article starts by explaining that the students learned about the current events of the Confederate flag in order to make their own opinions. The articles they read explained both sides of the Confederate flag arguments. They most commonly found that people either saw the flag as a symbol of honoring their ancestors that died in the war. The student learned that most symbols are interpreted differently with every person. It depends on their mindsets, education, upbringing and many other things to determine they view or understand a particular symbol. They also learned that the symbol is just an embodiment of the idea that is presented, not the idea itself. Another way the students used acting to describe different issues on the Confederate flag was to have debates on different political views. Guest speakers would visit and talk about the re-enactments and how they would use the Confederate flag. The students had many different viewpoints they could base their opinions
