flag has changed. I used to view it as a harmless symbol of the South’s past. Movies from Hollywood
such as, Gone with the Wind, contributed to this naive and innocent ideology. I did not realize the
negative impact it has had over time. This paper will address three reasons why I would vote to remove
a Confederate monument in my town’s museum. These three reasons are: it promotes racial hatred, it
elevates white supremacy, and those that argue that they should uphold Confederate monuments are not
telling the whole story.

It was a celebration of the “Southern White strength and the power of the
White”. On the Backstory podcast, it was said that the people of this celebration acted as if they, “didn’t
know they had lost”. America should not stand for this view of white supremacy. It declares equality to all, no matter the race.
The third reason why I would vote to remove a Confederate monument in my town’s museum is
because those who argue to uphold Confederate monuments are not telling the whole story. Their
argument is weak. They say they fly the Confederate flag because of their heritage and want to honor
their ancestors. However, when asked who their ancestor was, or what they fought for, they cannot
answer. As stated on Backstory, one man, who used to do reenactments of the Civil War, quit after
discovering what his Confederate ancestor had done to his slave. Others will raise the flag because of
soldiers and remembering the dead. But, it is not all about that. At that time, the African American
culture was being ruined. Even after the thirteenth Amendment, they still did not know what role they
