Events such as the 4th of July fireworks consist of almost every group in Coney Island. They band together as a community to enjoy the event. The Coney Island Mermaid Parade also is an event that is dedicated into preserving the dignity of American popular culture that exists in Coney Island. A major event that truly showed community spirit and love was when Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012. Even though it was a major tragedy that destroyed thousands of homes and lives, it also showed real sense of community throughout Coney Island. The community composed its stability because of all the people helped each other.
