Cone Snail For centuries, the shells of the cone snail have been used as currency within small communities. Their shells each have unique patterns to them, making it great for jewelry and art pieces. But don’t let their innocent looks fool you. The cone snail is one of the deadliest animals in the world, mainly found in the Indian and Pacific oceans, and the Caribbean and Red seas. These creatures, like bees, aren’t aggressive until you mess with them. Many scientists are inspired by this deadly creature and want to try to flip it around. Rather than a killing snail, maybe a curing snail.

If you’ve ever watched the movie ‘Jurassic Park’, you may know of the Lindstradt Air Gun. This gun was full of poisonous venom, from the cone snail. It

For the majority of the tanks, the variation in shell thickness matched that of the parent generation. The fourth tank which was initially composed of the thickest shells, were not as prevalent after the simulation. A possible explanation for the shift toward slightly thinner shell thickness is because of mutation that allows for additional shell thickness to appear among the population. Another explanation is that possessing a thick shell is expensive in terms of energy costs. Other studies have found that thinner shells are favored when crab predators are absent because they are less expensive to produce and allow the snails to experience rapid growth (Palmer, 1985).…

Most people wouldn’t think of the horseshoe crab, which dates back to about 400 million years ago, 200 million years before the dinosaurs existed. Something people do not always understand is the struggle marine biologists face in order to study animals who live in difficult to reach habitats. Yeti Crabs are a great example because of their extreme living conditions. In order to survive, they have to live next to a volcanic vent 2,200 meters beneath the surface and 900 miles south of Easter Island. If they stray too far from the hot water, they will freeze to death, but if they get too close to the vent, they will overheat and die. They are very mysterious creatures; they are blind, albino, and remotely related to lobsters and crabs.…
