Conductive Hearing Loss

I found this assignment to be interesting, but at the same time frustrating. I have never experienced something like being deaf in my life. I wish I remembered more in my past sign language courses because I found it extremely hard to convey and receive information. Many of my peers were giving me weird looks during my 12 hours of hearing loss. I felt like they thought I was being rude, so they were rude back to me. My friends and I joke around a lot when we are in our apartment together, so not being able to hear or speak to them was bizarre. Throughout the 12 hours my friends were messing around with me knowing I couldn’t say anything back. I did not like eating or watching the television when I was deaf. My friend made us burgers, and I couldn’t really tell him how I wanted my burger cooked. I also couldn’t give him much feedback about the burger he cooked. I could not enjoy the TV as much as I do when I could hear. The only way I knew what was going on during the show was by …show more content…
Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is a problem in the outer or middle ear, so sound cannot be conducted the same as in a healthy ear. Sensorineural hear loss is caused by non-functioning hair cells in the cochlea. Sensorineural is more serious because it could be permanent. Both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss limit the ear from producing the same sound as a healthy ear, but they are treated in different ways. Conductive hearing loss can be treated with medication, and sensorineural can be treated with earing aids or middle ear implants. Even though this experience was tough I’m still glad I did it. Deaf people face a challenge every day of their lives. I know I was only “deaf” for 12 hours, but it opened my eyes to what deaf people go through. These assignments we do in class are interesting, educational, and make make me feel thankful I have these abilities some might take for

“See What I Mean” In the video “See What I Mean” I noted numerous differences between the hearing and deaf communities. During the video in a class of hearing students and teacher, a student arrived late to class and when he arrived he spoke nothing, made no eye contact, did not disrupt the class, and the teacher did not acknowledge his tardiness. In a deaf class, the student arrived late and the teacher stopped class to ask why he was late, made eye contact with each other, and the student explained himself and told the class valuable information about traffic delaying him from arriving to class. In another scenario two hearing friends when departing, said their goodbyes quick.…

I was excited to go and on the way there we decided that we were going to pretend we were deaf; meaning that we would sign the entire time. Right as we set foot outside the car the silence began, even Alex’s mom mentioned how she had never chaperoned for kids that were this quiet. We talked a few times before our way in, like when the girl behind me asked me where I got my backpack, I didn't want to say that I couldn't hear so I told her anyways. Once we stepped foot in the park, we were really good at not breaking “character”. Not only was it a cool way to interact during the day, but it helped us emerge into the deaf culture and learn sign language better because we had to keep up with each others’ signs and fingerspelling.…

A Deaf Event I took an American Sign Language class last semester, Fall2014 at San Bernardino Valley College. The teacher had us choose an event to attend for a quiz grade. She had given us many events to choose from. The one I chose was Barnes and Noble “ASL story signing.” I had chosen this event because it was the only one that worked with my schedule and also because the story signing was being told by deaf/hearing impaired children.…

The Deaf event that I attended was a silent dinner held at Starbucks coffee. Before I arrived to the silent dinner, I was not sure what to expect or how much of the conversation I would be able to keep up with. When I was at the silent dinner, I was greeted kindly by those around me, and had the chance to meet many other signers that were a mix of both fellow Liberty students, and other people from the local community. The silent dinner that I attended was different than every other dinner event that I have attended, from the introduction that we made to the conversations and small talk that we shared.…
