Wildlife Biologist Joseph Brandt as well as many other volunteers and bird specialists are trying their best to increase the population of the endangered California condor. At one point in time, these amazing birds almost went extinct. There are many reasons for the decrease in condor population, but the main cause is lead poisoning. The birds are scavengers and prey on dead carcasses. If they eat an animal that has been shot with lead ammunition, they could possibly contract this poisoning.
They condors are mainly bred in captivity. Every young bird released into the wild is tagged with a transmitter. This device allows scientists to track the condors location at all times.
