Condone Cannibalism

Improved Essays
• I want to preface that I have the utmost respect for other cultures, their beliefs, and practices. That stated, from my own perspective and beliefs, whales and dolphins are sentient beings which entitles both species to protected rights. This includes being hunted for game or eaten for food. As I would not condone cannibalism despite playing part to cultural belief or ritual, I do not condone the murdering of these species. I can sympathize and understand how hard it must be to change something so integral to your heritage and base belief. There are many customs and rituals that are no longer practice as they are no longer deemed humane.
• Although I strongly disagree with the practice, without a doubt it infringes on the nations rights.

Regional consideration should be given to surrounding nations. I feel this would optimize the chance of a fair hearing.
• I define a cultural activity as an event, practice, or rite that has been passed down or inherited by descendants. A good example of this could be the Olympics. Another cultural activity is spear fishing. Polynesians have practiced the art of spear fishing for centuries. In some parts of the US hunting is another a cultural activity. In places in the Americas the use of psychedelic flora in teas or dishes used in rituals are considered cultural exemptions as they are labeled as the ingredients used are labeled internationally as scheduled drugs.
• My strong sense of belief that whales and dolphins are sentient stands. The practice should change and both species should be granted international protected rights, despite being endangered or not. The economic loss will hurt the fishing villages, I am sure, but this would not be the first time a cultural activity or practice was abandoned due to upkeep of a higher moral standard. No, it does not weigh into my decision in this particular

The propaganda piece Blackfish tried to turn it’s audience against the idea of whales held in captivity, yet the film was ineffective because it utilized emotional appeal, inappropriate diction, and contained many logical fallacies thus alienating those that viewed the piece. Blackfish, commissioned by CNN Films and directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, is a response to the, amongst other things, taking whales from the wild, separating whales from their mothers, and keeping them in a miniscule enclosures, and perhaps most recently the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. What Blackfish aims to accomplish is emotionally connecting with it’s audience, more likely than not being those who do not know much about orca whales in captivity. Where…

Why Orcas Should Not Be Kept in Captivity For many years killer whales have been brutally used in the entertainment industry. These mammals are not only being used for public display, but are being treated unfairly. Instead of being left alone in the wild as they should be, they are being taken away not only from their homes but from their family. Many people may not know this, but behind closed doors at the various Seaworld's, located all over the country, these creatures are being held and “cared for” in unsafe barbarous water tanks.…

SeaWorld’s Orca Problem Every year, millions of people are drawn to marine parks to see captive animals, including everyone’s favorite, the killer whales, perform in shows for their entertainment. Not many people think about what goes on behind these said shows. What we don't think about is the torture, maltreatment and even forced insemination that goes on in these “wonderful” places. Captured from the wild In the open ocean, orcas are smart, cooperative creatures. They work together to find food, survive, and even share very complex bonds in their matrilineal groups.…

Orcas Should Not Be Held Captive Orcas have been captive for over 50 years, but the persistent question to have them set free has recently been in action. The general analysis is asked; Are Orcas in captivity at SeaWorld a good thing or a bad thing? Orcas should not be held captive in SeaWorld, and should be set free in sea pens or the ocean. The actions at SeaWorld are inhumane, they keep the Orcas from living their full life, and restrict them from their natural habitat.…

Whales Whales in captivity is a horrible thing because the whales are separated from their familie, are forced to perform in front of screaming audiences, and they can act out and hurt humans and each other in small spaces. Male orca whales have collapsed dorsal fins. When there in the wild there dorsal fin stays straight up. When there in captivity there dorsal fin collapses. This is most likely because they are cramped up in a tight place so they can’t swim freely.…

Not only they are killed, but their meat is also sold in the Japanese market and given in schools, even though it contains high levels of mercury. The film The Cove uses logos, pathos and ethos to effectively persuade their audience to seek some type of action from the audience to protect the lives of dolphins and to inform people on what is going on in the town of Taiji.…

SeaWorld. We have all heard the name, considering they were once one of the most successful amusement parks in the world. Everyone wanted to come see Shamu, the huge majestic killer whale, do tricks so close to us we could get soaked. The whales always seemed to be in sync with the performers; we thought nothing could top getting splashed by gallons of water by a humongous whale. Unfortunately, in recent years, the saying “all press is good press” has not seemed to apply to SeaWorld.…

Humanity has lost many beloved celebrities in the past year. David Bowie…Prince…Carrie Fisher… and, of course, Tilikum, the killer whale who stared in Blackfish. The thirty-five-year-old SeaWorld Orlando “employee” mysteriously died on January 6. Naturally, the death has sparked debate, as Blackfish portrayed the whale as a misunderstood and mistreated prisoner who murdered three people out of anger towards his captors. However, the sensationalist media has made a tragedy out of something inevitable.…

Whaling has been a controversial activity for some years now. Whales in today’s society have been regarded as “gentle giants” and highly intelligent animals, which is true. Some nations however, such as the Norwegian and Japanese have whaling deeply rooted in their culture and history. For many centuries, their ancestors took part in whaling as a means to sustain their life, livelihood and culture. I agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption, given that the hunting of the whales is regulated to prevent over-hunting so that the whale population can replenish.…
