Condoleezza was always known as the smart girl. At the age of 16 Rice had already met the requirements to graduate St. Mary’s. Rice planned to continue high school, but taking Advancement Placement courses and take a little extra time on the piano. Rice was determined then to go further study in Europe. Her parent sat down with her to tell her than she could skip her senior year and just jump right into college. However, her father knew she wanted to go to music school like Juilliard to pursue her piano dreams.
Condoleezza came back with this proposal the next day on how she wanted to go to college, but not give up her senior year. Rice stated, “Why not finish my senior year in high school and start my freshman year in college at the same time?” (Rice pg 151). Her parents were too excited about the idea, but were willing to make it work. However, her father was not okay with the idea of Rice living in a dorm. She then

Eventually she will finally gain her freedom when she officially starts college part time. This didn’t interfere with her strong academic work ethic. Rice will later receive the honor of Denver University Outstanding Senior Woman. Later, Rice will receive a letter announcing she had been accepted to Notre Dame University. Rice was excited about the move, but also sad she had to be so far away from her family.
During this time the Watergate Scandal was occurring. “The Watergate scandal began early in the morning of June 17, 1972, when several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee, located in the Watergate complex of buildings in Washington, D.C. This was no ordinary robbery: The prowlers were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, and they had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents,” (“Watergate Scandal”).
