Management by exception refers to the common trait of transactional leaders to only approach followers when something goes wrong, meaning they are not involved in the completion of the task. transactional leadership can be seen as an 'old ' way of thinking whereas transformational is much more advanced.While transactional leaders 'talk the talk ', transformational leaders 'walk the walk '.
Transformational leadership focuses on relationship oriented leadership, “The transformational leader asks followers to transcend their own self-interests for the good of the group. Transformational leaders must consider the need to develop themselves, the circumstances of the leadership situation, and their followers” (Martin et al, 2006).
Transformational leadership is more about the group and its individuals ‘growing’ over the course of the activity and how the leader can influence the group. Having a transformational leader can help increase enthusiasm and excitement about tasks, even those that initially seem daunting. Environmental dangers - If it rains it could become cold and dark quite quickly; Group cohesiveness and maturity - the group is relatively mature being 17/18 however their cohesiveness is not great as they are snapping at each other; individual skills - as an outdoor leadership class it can be assumed everyone is relatively fit and able; competence of the leader - again it can be assumed that this is substantial however if it does begin to rain this might change; and consequences of the decision - if they decide to journey to the next hut someone may get hypothermia, clothes might get wet, they would most likely get into camp in the dark and have to set up, and the participants would most likely be exhausted the next
