Most of these classes are specified for coaches and trainers but there in lies the issue. Classes are a great way to teach about certain topics, but only teaching coaches and trainers does nearly nothing for the benefit of the player. Coaches and trainers are not the ones playing the game, putting their body and mind at risk. Athletes deserve the right to know but that often comes at a cost. Programs such as “Concussion for Students” state they are a free program which “has been designed specifically for students to inform them on how to identify, react to, and prevent concussions” (NFHS, 1). While they do offer a free program where athletes can learn how four different students learn about concussion in different ways, they also offer a more in depth course that cost over 10$. This is where the “Heads Up Safety” class I hope to implement will be different. I plan to have the course adopted by the Dallas board of education to teach for free in class to those who plan on becoming athletes. This of course would mean that the class would have to be implemented before 7th grade in the State of Texas. In Texas ,7th grade is when students are able to start participating in contact sports. The class will be a one semester course such as SexED and will teach basic safety measures as well as have students research the effects and dangers of concussions. Students will also use the Concussion …show more content…
In the past there has been multiple solutions to this issue and yet they all target the wrong audience and the wrong issues and which is why they ultimately fail or who’s impact is so small it’s a mere pin prick in the larger scheme of things. In order to combat the issue, the problem must be addressed in a different manner. Instead of reaching out to an older age group, a group that is no longer interested in playing contact sports and would much rather watch, an age group that is overly impressed with the brutality of sports, why not aim for a younger age group? An age group that knows nothing of injuries and of fame and fortune. An age group whose minds are still developing and are willing to listen. That is the solution the problem. Results may not be instant but within a few generations the number of concussions will began to decline and the amount of reporting concussions will increase therefore management of concussions can be better handled. This all starts with the education of the youth. In order to provide this revolution in concussion education many steps must first be taken. The Heads Up Safety Foundation must first be implemented and must take off. Next, the Heads Up Safety class which will be a required half semester course for any of those wishing to play in contact sports must be acknowledged and
