What can paralyze and kill an otherwise healthy athlete with in 2 to 5 years? Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE. It is a neurodegenerative disease which causes your brain matter to slowly break down. When your brain breaks down it can cause many symptoms that make everyday tasks difficult to complete. ALS, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a very deadly disease. It causes the nerves in your body to stop functioning correctly therefore it makes it impossible to move. These diseases are most prevalent in professional athletes because they are subjected to many occurrences of head trauma. It is believed that ALS and CTE are caused by repetitive brain injuries. When an athlete gets hit hard in the head they normally suffer from a concussion which can causes serious issues down the road if they continue to get brain injuries. More rules about non contact should be utilized to make players safer. One rule that might be beneficial is to prevent soccer players from hitting the soccer ball with their head during a game. During all practices of any sport, there should be no contact so it would be less likely for them to get a concussion. It would be greatly beneficial to all athletes if helmets were improved to limit concussions when wearing them. It should be mandatory for a player to rest for at least two weeks after a brain injury so the brain can have adequate time to heal. Training videos on the causes of brain injuries, symptoms of, and treatment should be shown to all athletes of high risk sports. If new rules, safety gear, and education were implemented in sports there would be a reduction in the rate of concussions that happen
