Mike Webster, the tormented soul. Mike Webster is a Hall of Fame center who won 4 Super Bowls with the Steelers, sadly suffered from CTE. Numerous nights Mike suffered, lying in a dark room, bed-bound in a haze of pain and narcotics, and bucket of vomit by his side. CTE, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain mostly found in athletes with a history of repetitive brain trauma, including concussions. Currently across the country, the NFL is conducting studies to determine the effect of concussions on their former players. Critics often argue that football is becoming more safe because of increased regulations that more firmly police players. However, that reasoning is absolutely not correct… Because there are continuous illegal and cheap hits. One study conducted by Sporting Goods Manufacturer's association found that there was an 11% decrease in football’s “core”, “Most parents get scared of what their kid will be once they get a concussion” (Maese p 1). Often that reason is correct, several blows to the head can cause many problems in your brain. The NFL have been changing the environment of the game to firmly police the game, They put rules on the game so you can’t hit high and dirty. And to help prevent concussions (Maese p. 2). The reasoning behind that is because the want to keep the flow of players at a steady stream and make sure kids won’t start getting scared of the game. Football has a higher rate of brain damage than any other sport, Football has a higher rate of people to get hurt over and over again to develop brain damage (Maese) pg 6. This is true because many people try to kill people to make them look like a better player and in return for not tackling with proper tackle from many people can get injured over and over again.
