When many people receive a concussion they have no idea how damaging it is to their present and future lives. Between 1.6 and 3.8 million concussions in sports are reported per year, but definitely more since concussions are often never reported. A concussion is when a blow is taken to the head causing unconsciousness, amnesia, and possibly Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in the long term. CTE is acquired by repetitive brain traumas and it slowly eats away at your brain. It changes your whole personality, and in many cases it is the cause of suicide and abuse. “A concussion can affect a student's physical, emotional, and social health and or well being” (Skurski). This means that concussions are affecting to entire lives. They affect how people act and feel everyday. “A licensed health provider needs to give the ok for a student to return to play a sport physical or not to return” (Kirkendall). This means that students are not able to play because medical officials are trying to prevent further injuries and or second impact syndrome. The school nurse can also act as a communicator to the coaches, parent, and child (Kirkendall). “Mike Webster was an American pro football player in the 1900’s. He died from a heart attack, but after his death they discovered that he was a victim of CTE. Webster suffered many concussions in sports and possibly suffered from second impact syndrome” (Watson). This means that even though this was a while ago, it is just a big of a problem, regardless of today’s progression. Additionally, protocols for concussions in football have been lacking ever since it began. Terry Long was also an American football player who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. he was another victim of CTE from receiving too many concussions. “However unlike Webster, Long committed suicide because of how miserable CTE made his life with effects like depression and other mood swings”. This is an example of how concussions are a cause of suicide and or depression. “Justin Strzelczyk was another football player, he played for the Steelers and played nine full seasons of football” (Watson). Strzelczyk suffered from CTE, and he passed away at the age of only 36. This shows that concussions are able to affect people at any age and can be a horrible cause of death, “he died being chased by the police and he rammed into a tanker truck and he was killed instantly” (Watson).
