Concrete Experience The first class exercise that we did in class was the Adventure in the Amazon; in this exercise we worked in our groups that we formed the first day of class. Our objective was to rank the fifteen items listed in accordance to our survival. This was a two-part exercise, the first was ranking them individually with no help from others and the second was doing collectively as a group. Individually I did the best out of our group and since of my past experiences in the Marines. I have a firm understanding of what I would need in order to survive with limited resources. My total individual difference compared to the expert was 36. As a team I felt like we did extremely well, we communicated with one another and listened when …show more content…
It made me realize that just because I have been raised experiencing the outdoors or camping, it doesn’t mean that others have as well. I guess a couple different individuals in our group really had no idea what to do to survive in the wild because they have never really experienced anything of the sort. In a day and age where vacations in hotels, all-inclusive resorts, and RV’s with air conditioning have replaced camping with tents and a bonfire to stay warm at night, some people just aren’t used to this sort of thing and simply have no idea what it’s like to be out in the midst of the wilderness. I also realize that some people just don’t like to be put in high-pressure situations, even if it is a hypothetical like this exercise. They don’t even want to think about making these types of decisions because it may develop some kind of anxiety for them, so they just simply don’t want to contribute or make any executive decisions and just let the rest of us …show more content…
Some people felt like a first aid kit was the most important, yet no one was injured whatsoever. Some people are just more cautious than others and that’s what made them feel secure. Meanwhile, others like myself wanted the large knife above all because well in reality no one can survive without food and we would use it to hunt, skin, and prepare the food. No matter what was important to you, you just have to sit back and try to understand the other people surrounding you because you’re not alone and their opinions matter

Wallace Stegner’s “Wilderness Letter” portrays the importance of wilderness. Wilderness has always held a different meaning as a child for me it held another world. Playing outside, going to wildlife reserves, and watching shows like “Zoboomafoo” that taught about different animals and their habitat all played a part in my love for it. Experiencing the outdoors should be something that is dome willingly to detach and refresh. The Internet has slowly taken that away from children because instead of going outdoors time is spent staring at screens.…

Overall the project went well. I enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to complete this assignment. The process of interviewing people helped me to better understand friends I thought I already knew and to connect with them further. The process also allowed me to view what students can learn from a youth group but also how youth group teachings can lack. For example, in some situations, students may not be diving deep enough into the word to get a grasp of why values like cheating and lying can be unethical.…
