When choosing a college campus, prospectives students commonly look at what type of housing is offered, what there is to do on campus and if the food is of quality. The school commonly sells the campus by giving a personal tour to a future student. The guide makes sure to build up on the highlights of campus and not to tell about the real problems on a campus. Many students have made it to college and discovered they chose the wrong campus, then end up transferring after a semester or two. Concordia University Chicago needs to improve campus life by engaging students in more activities, creating new spaces for students to gather, and updating housing facilities in order to keep students from transferring elsewhere. …show more content…
Many students travel far from home each year to go to school in a strange environment, some new students have problems coping. Campuses’ who offer an array of activities have found higher rates of enrollment and student happiness overall. Many campuses have created small festivals to ease the load of work. At DePaul University in Chicago they have started an event called FEST that occurs in May once the semester is over, the event is a concert with big name artists for students to enjoy after finals. Other schools such as Kendall College of Art and Design host smaller events during finals week that offers free massages, food, and yoga for the students to destress. According to an article published by U.S. News “It helps them build community: Since they're leaving their family and sometimes their friends behind, getting involved helps them discover new friends with similar interests.” (Mayfield). Concordia’s housing is very outdated and has had reporting of pests such as mice and cockroaches. Compared to surrounding universities Concordia’s housing options are very limited, other universities are offering single rooms, apartment style, and larger rooms. If Concordia were to begin offering one of these it could improve the happiness of current students. Some of the problems that could be currently tackled would be to add air conditioning to rooms or install new carpet and fixtures. At Columbia College in downtown Chicago they offer apartment style housing that offers a skyline lounge, a graffiti room and art studio. According to the article on Herman Miller, "Poorly maintained or inadequate residential facilities was the number one reason for rejecting enrollment at an institution, according to the survey.” (“Room and Board Redefined”).
