The essence of deductive reasoning is drawing a conclusion from a given statement. If the given statement follows a conclusion from a hypothesis, then it is called valid deductive reasoning or the Law of Detachment.

ONCE FIREFIGHTERS had jimmied the door that July afternoon, the police squeezed into a beaten apartment groaning with possessions, a grotesque parody of the “lived-in” condition. Clearly, its occupant had been a hoarder. The officers from the 115th Precinct called the medical examiner’s office, which involves itself in suspicious deaths and unidentified bodies, and a medical legal investigator arrived. His task was to rule out foul play and look for evidence that could help locate the next of kin and identify the body.…

In “Why We Should Trust Scientists,” by Naomi Oreskes, the presenter describes what makes science so unique, and distinguishes it from other fields such as religion. Oreskes claims that science is an appeal to authority, but unlike other similar appeals, it is the collective authority of a group of people, somewhat like a community. Throughout her speech, she conveys to her audience different examples of historical figures who worked in science, and uses them as proofs to help understand the point that she is making. In doing so, she describes that what makes this specific field so special, is the fact that science itself, and the ways that one tries to test a theory on a specific subject are not related; but rather, as was said by Paul Feyerabend…

Logic is a synonym for reasoning, and is used as the basis for many arguments . It is associated with facts and truth but does not require them. In her essay "Finding the Good Argument OR Why Bother With Logic?", Rebecca Jones places logical strategies into two basic categories of deductive and inductive reasoning. Deductive reasoning begins with a common idea or belief and uses it to simplify a more specific situation. This allows the audience to relate and make sense of the argument being presented.…

“Scholarship boy: good student, troubled son” (Rodriguez 341). A scholarship boy is one that strays away from the people that care most about them in order to succeed academically. Freire would appreciate that Rodriguez is beginning to understand that the regurgitation of information does not lead to a better student, but in fact makes them a worse student because all they do is reiterate what they are told and do not fully learn and develop an understanding for the topic. In Freire’s essay he says: The more students work at storing the deposits entrusted to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness which would result from their intervention in the world as transformers of that world. The more completely they accept the passive role imposed on them, the more they tend simply to adapt to the world as it is and to the fragmented view of reality deposited in them.…

There are 3 different types of knowledge: acquaintance knowledge (I know Auckland well), skillful knowledge (I know how to ride a bike), and propositional knowledge (I know that snakes are reptiles). The first two forms of knowledge are interesting, but we are only concerned with the third, what it is to know some proposition, ‘p’. We automatically note a difference between belief and knowledge. Individuals can believe propositions that are not true; but if you know that ‘p’, then ‘p’ must be true. You cannot know something incorrect; if it is incorrect, then you do not know it.…

Explicitly, Trump’s tweet in its current arrangement appears to be a disjunctive/hypothetical syllogism hybrid: P1: We, as a country, either have borders or we don 't. C : If we don 't have borders, we don 't have a country. Being charitable and filling in implicit premises, Trump’s argument takes on the following format: P1: All countries have borders P2:…

3.8. DEDUCTIVE RESEARCH “A deductive approach is concerned with developing a hypothesis (or hypotheses) based on existing theory, and then designing a research strategy to test the hypothesis” (Wilson, 2010:7) Monette et al (2005: 34) further explains deductive approach by the means of hypotheses, which can be derived from the propositions of the theory. In other words, deductive approach is concerned with deducting conclusions from premises or propositions. “Deduction begins with an expected pattern that is tested against observations, whereas induction begins with observations and seeks to find a pattern within them” (Babbie, 2010: 52). Is has been stated that “deductive means reasoning from the particular to the general.…
