In the book ‘Trouble in Mind,’ author Leon F. Litwack illustrates the hard times of slaves during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. During this time there were major hardships that African Americans had to encounter; lynching, racism, and the fight for freedom. Litwack doing his research on slave hard times since 1961 studied how hard the Jim Crow laws were mentally, and physically hard for African Americans. The book, ‘Trouble in Mind’ starts at the end of Reconstruction when the idea of whites “Redemption” spread along the south. In the introduction to, "The Attentional Commons", political philosopher Matthew Crawford contends that the demand for a person’s attention has both personal and societal implications. In fact, he proposes that they warrant treating attention as a shared resource, just as we do with air or water. Furthermore, Doctor Crawford points out that factors such as motion, beauty, novelty, and sound elicit responses that preempt paying attention to other things, thereby limiting opportunities for socialization and “our ability to notice and register novel things” (p 14). In contrast, the absence of stimuli focusing our attention enhances the environment for creativity and innovation, concentrates wealth to those who can afford to pay for these environments.…

The Mind at Work, written by Mike Rose is a story about day-to-day jobs that people partake in for a living, his main purpose of this story was to make people aware of the need to take notice of forms of intelligence that have not been tested through IQ tests and bring various things together like how the brain and hand can not be separated, they work dynamically. In this essay, I will go over the key points that I thought Rose wanted his readers to understand also, what I disagree with and agree with and also how the hand and brain work together. I found that the first couple of chapters in the book went over the key points rather than the last couple of chapters, Rose explains that all work has some sort of skill required to do the job…

In an article called the New York Times by Alex Rosenberg it tells how the assumption that we know our own mind is not really true. Ever since Plato, a lot of philosophers have shared common sense’s confidence about the nature of its own thoughts. Yet, research in cognitive and behavioral sciences has statements that brought questions to prove the absolute by philosophers. Descartes’ emphasis in his “Meditations” states how the knowledge of our own minds’ nature is more reliable than any other belief. But we make mistakes as humans every day, even if we think it is the right decision.…

In the beginning of second semester I was being introduced into Psychology 101 which I had no idea on what this course will be teaching. As I just know the word “PSY” it would be mentioning about physical or something to do with the body. Then, doing some research about what Psychology will be teaching about from YouTube. Also, reading some articles from this website on what they will be mentioning about what the body will reacts to some situations. In the past months as learning about the basic about Psychology 101 this would be an advantage in taking the next step of becoming a police officer which I could use it to think like a victim and mange an issue or situation into peace that everything could be resolved in a matter of a way.…

Nature of Mind Summary David Armstrong wholeheartedly believes in “Scientism” and agrees strongly with Materialist views. He starts off by making the point that he absolutely believes that humans have minds. Some people believe that the mind is the physical brain while others have spiritual beliefs about the mind. There are other views and theories out there, but those are the most popular, controversial ones. Although there’s many theories, most people can come to an agreement that all humans have certain functions that clearly link up to the mind/brain.…

John Stott’s book, Your Mind Matters, explains the importance of why Christians need to truly think. Based on scripture, he believes that diligent thinking is a necessary part of a Christian’s life in at least six areas, worship, faith, holiness, guides, evangelism, and ministry. Stott felt need to write about how their mind actually matters and is critical to a Christian’s calling because “…the pressures against using the mind carefully, honestly, and faithfully as an essential aspect of the Christian’s calling are stronger now than ever before” (pg.8). This is especially true of young people throughout history because they always tend to be activist and dedicated supporters of a cause without really thinking through anything regarding their cause or their actions. They are emotionally driven.…
