In Lord of the Flies, William Golding proclaims that “society” is a made up concept that exists only to create a feeling of security. When the boys first come together, they turn to the idea of order in an attempt to find comfort, endeavouring to recreate civilization by electing a leader and putting rules into place. However, the comfort of directives are soon over ridden by the savage instincts of the boys as they begin to find joy in hunting, killing and inflicting pain. At the conclusion of the novel, the boys come to the realisation that having laws and someone in charge does not automatically make peace and kindness, as they first thought, ultimately revealing that the usual perception of a law bound nation is simply a delusion.…

We all know the rules of civilization, what’s right and what’s wrong, but what if we were put in a situation of survival? Would we follow the rules like Piggy, Simon and Ralph, or like Jack Merridew in Lord of the Flies, seek power and abandon the rules of civilization? William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, suggests that the pull of animal instinct competes with the rules of civilization and eventually overpowers it when humans are put in a situation of survival. Jack is a perfect example of how strong the pull of animal instinct is. Jack is one of the oldest boys on the island.…

The Natural Order Introduction The natural order, as I see it, represents the set of laws that govern the natural world around us. These laws are sometimes at odds with the laws that we in civilized society have set forth. In Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber”, he gives us a glimpse of how certain individuals would act if civilized society were to collapse around them. In this story there is no societal standards, only the laws that govern the natural world.…

2001 A Space Odyssey and the Odyssey have many similarities. The Ancient Greeks at the time of the Odyssey were wanting to keep themselves separated from the “barbarians”. The Greeks wanted to become more civilized during this time of discovery and exploration Homer portrays the beasts/peoples in the Odyssey as uncivilized and puts them in the same class as the civilized Greeks. An example of this is the Cyclops. The Cyclops is a pastoral nomad that goes against the customs of hospitality and lacks ingenuity.…
