In Lord of the Flies, the conch shell is a critical aspect that symbolizes civilization and law. The purpose of a symbol is to signify important ideas with different meanings from their literary sense (“Symbolism”). In the beginning of the book, two British boys, Ralph and Piggy, are stranded on an island and finds a conch shell in the lagoon. Ralph uses the instrument to assemble any survivors on the island. After gathering as many boys as he can, they listen to Ralph with obedience as if he was “the men with the megaphones” (Golding 18). These children recognizes the simple act of authority because they had adults in their lives they would obey.
