Ralph uses the conch to call all the boys for a meeting to inform them that there are no adults on the island and they must look after themselves. Jack immediately exclaims, “We’ll have rules!” and it is decided that the boys must raise their hand to speak and unless they have the conch, they cannot speak. Piggy receives the conch and brings up the fact that they may never get rescued because no one knows where they are. Ralph agrees with his point but states, “this is a good island”.
Then a boy with a mulberry-colored birthmark requests to speak but is too afraid to do so. Piggy acts as an interpreter telling the group that the boy wonders what they are going to do with “snake-thing” or the “beastie” that comes out at dark. Ralph explains
