Conch Lord Of The Flies Analysis

In William Golding's Lord of the flies, the boys who are stranded on the island come in contact with many elements that symbolize ideas or concepts on society. The symbols change throughout the story and give a view on the boys. Throughout the novel new symbols are shown which change how the story progresses .Golding uses the conch, piggy's glasses, and the beast to expose how people can become uncivilized and how people adapt to their environment. The conch is the symbol of civilization and order. When the conch is first discovered by piggy he tells ralph to blow into it to call the other boys who are on the island (Golding 15). As a result the conch becomes the symbol of order. Ralph then meets with the rest of the boys who are on the island , they later decide to elect a leader and they choose Ralph rather than jack who is the quire leader. Ralph says at the meeting “ I'll give him the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking”(Golding p.33). It is used to govern the boys, and the boy who have the conch can speak this maintains order within the boys. The first thing Ralph want to do is get rescued so he wants to start a signal fire. After thinking of ways to start a fire Ralph says “ his specs- use them as burning glasses” (Golding 40) which are used by focusing light through the lens. Without Piggy’s glasses it would be near impossible to light a fire. The glasses are not only use to start a signal fire, they are also used for making fire to cook food. Later on in the novel when the power system changes jack decides to steal Piggy's glasses for his tribe. Hence the power for him to create fire.
