Maui Chamber Orchestra presented their Fall Concert on October 18, 2015 at Maui’s
Historic Iao Theatre. I went to the concert with my 13 year old sister. She hesitated at first, when I asked her to come with me, saying that “It’s going to be boring.” Teenagers these days don’t appreciate classical music. After some arguing, she finally decided to come with me. We arrived at the venue five minutes before the program started. It began at 3:00, and ended around 5pm. The venue was smaller than I thought. The concert was well attended, mostly by middle aged individuals.
Before the concert started, I noticed that the musicians were on stage, double checking and tuning their instruments. I was talking to my sister when I noticed that everyone quieted, a hint that the program was starting. The conductor, Robert E. Wills went on stage, wearing a tailcoat tuxedo with cummerbund and black bow tie. He welcomed the audience and introduced their first piece humorously.
Franz Josef Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto E flat Hob. VIIe;1 was a great piece to start the program. Pam Humphrey, the trumpet soloist was excellent. My sister described Humphrey as someone who “plays her music passionately.” The orchestra played three movements of this piece. It showcased the trumpet’s capabilities. The first movement, Allegro was festive. The second movement, Andante was slower. I was amazed on how Pam Humphrey was able to change from key to key at a little amount of time. The last movement,…
