This past weekend, I went to watch a concert that Warwick Veterans Band held Saturday night. The three pieces of music they played were Fanfare Esprit, Godfather, and Christmas Past. Generally, the entire band played the music accurately, used the proper technique, unique to each instrument and created a balance amongst themselves. However, as professional as the concert had sounded, it had some flaws here and there. Dynamics were one of the biggest shortcomings that occurred while the band played, along with some others that should be fixed. I gave Warwick Veterans Band a 17 out of 20 for their playing at the concert.

Throughout the piece, the tempo is quick, but steady and consistent. Listening to the band play Fanfare, it brought along a feeling of a very warm mood and the image of lively character. This was an exciting piece and of course, a great concert opener. For the most part, the notes played were all in tune and accurate. The predominant melody of the trumpets and brass could be heard and the sound was clean, played with proper dynamics and a unified tempo. One small issue at measure 34 was that the percussion got slightly excited, when that section of Fanfare Esprit was actually supposed to be softly played, mellow, and just a small part of the song. Almost all of the dynamics of the piece were played and heard. For instance, the crescendo peak at measure 46 was undoubtedly noticeable as the entire force of the band came together confidently, and the multi-melody at measure 66 ensured a good blend of three melodies and a baseline.
