In the modern days, there are various levels of clarinet competitions. They have played significant roles in clarinet development. The top talented young clarinet performers are usually discovered from these competitions. From the participants’point of view, they tend to gain experience and learn from other participants. For those competitions which have crucial influence internationally, it is an unwritten rule that organizing committee always invite a prestige composer to compose a new piece for that year’s competition. No doubt, this action is one way to broaden clarinet repertoire collection world widely. Carl Maria von Weber, Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major op. 74 Louis Spohr, Concerto No. 1 in C minor op. 26
Louis Spohr, Concerto No. 4 in E minor WoO 20
Bernhard Henrik Crusell, Concerto in F minor op. 5
Above five concertos were composed during early romantic period. The three composers have contributed to clarinet composition greatly. German composer Louis Spohr had composed four famous concertos for clarinet through his lifetime. Finnish composer Bernhard Henrik Crusell also wrote three great concertos for clarinet. German composer Carl Maria von Weber composed total seven master works for clarinet.
Second Round:
Like last round, three pieces of clarinet music were required to be performed in this round. The first piece was a commissioned composition which called Cirrus Light for solo clarinet in Bb or A by Jonathan Harvey, a British composer . Unfortunately, he passed away in the end of 2012. The second item was a sonata from below list :
