Concert Report: Pomona College Orchestra In Pomona College in October 4th, the orchestra played three pieces; Tangents for George Walker, Trittico Botticelliano for Ottorian Respighi, and Symphony No. 104 for Franz Joseph Haydn. The first one for Walker music like Jazz style, but I did not know what type is it. The second music for Respighi were three movements: La Primavera (Spring), L’Adorazione dei Magi (The Adoration of the Magi), and La Nascita di Venere (The Birth of Venus). The first La Primavera (Spring) is in E major, and the same name of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” The second one, L’Adorazione dei Magi (The Adoration of the Magi) is G major, and the last one La nascita di Venere (The Birth of Venus) is in F major. The last one was …show more content…
The first one was really loud and fast. The intro of the Walkers’ music was scary as well, and they were using a lot of woodwinds and brass, but in some parts it was slowly and then it became fast. The slowly part played it by the violin and a little of the harp. The dynamic as well was loud and scary. The second one Trittico Botticelliano; The first movement, La Primavera (Spring) is having three parts for it; the first part was really fast at the begging and happy and makes me feel like a river is running with lots of birds around it. It reminded me of Vivaldi’s music because same starting and naming. The melody of this music gets slower at the middle of it and then at the end of it get faster than the middle part. It reminded me of “Pocahontas” and the Disney cartons. It was really a wonderful piece to watch it and hear it. Also the dynamic of this piece was soft and a little bit louder at some parts. The second part of this piece L’Adorazione dei Magi (The Adoration of the Magi) was softly and slowly. It was like a magic at the beginning of it. It is in my opinion the hardest movement, and it was based on the bassoon. It made me really calm and it relaxed me a lot. The third movement La nascita di Venere (The Birth of Venus) opened by the bassoon and the magical harmonic. This movement was focused by the solo woodwinds, which made it really faith and joyful. It reminded me of Vivaldi’s music as well; especially at the …show more content…
In that day, my mood was really relaxed and I was listing really carefully about everything they were doing. I was like a child who is watching a carton. This orchestra makes took my imagination as well. I was looking mostly to the violins player. They were really professional, and also because I like violin a lot. But at the beginning I didn’t like the first piece. But when the seound piece began. My moods got to the rhythm immediately, and it was really a magic to me. The lights and the place was really nice and big. I was surprised when I saw it with my family. I was my first time that I saw a stage like this. It reminded me of some church that I visited in George State. The ceiling was really nice and the lights that in it was amazing. It was lightly lights at the beginning of the concert. Also, instrumentalists were practicing before they start playing. After that when the maestro came, the lights was like a sunrise. It was awesome and amazing. It fascinated me. Also, between the first two pieces and the third piece it was a five minutes intermission, and between movements they took one minute

After this movement, all the instruments began playing a strong fortissimo beat, which gradually increased the tension, leading up to a muted trumpet solo. The strings dominated the remainder of the movement, with a strong legato melody passed from the ’cellos to the violins, and, finally, to the basses. The third movement could be classified by the increasing significance of the drums, who moved the orchestra along in a clear duple meter. Their presence became less important after a ritardando, which brought back the light melody to the woodwinds.…

The instruments are all moving quickly and playing different and conflicting parts all over one another, which creates an interesting and energetic sound. I liked having this energetic and lively section towards the end of the piece. It created anticipation and excitement while listening, while also revisiting some of the initial musical sections from the first movement. I thought that the revisiting of initial musical pieces tied the whole thing together, by showing the connection through the first and last movements. I thought it was interesting that this movement ended with a downbeat, as it initially started with an…
