It was the theme song of the musical/opera of the same name. It had a fast tempo during the refrain melody, and the tempo during the verses slowed down. The dynamics of this piece were loud during the refrain, and soft during the verses. About halfway through the piece, all the instruments stopped, and woman’s scream sounded over the concert hall loudspeakers. Immediately after this, the loud refrain started up again. This made me jump and sent a chill or two down my spine. The texture of this piece was homophonic, and the mood was dark, mysterious, and foreboding. I really liked this piece, because I immediately recognized the melody.…

The Baroque and Classical eras of music were both amazing periods full of musical genius and ingenuity that has made them go down in history as some of the most influential time periods for music composition. Among some of the most praised and defining pieces from those time periods include Dido’s “Lament” from Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” from the Baroque period, while pieces such as “Queen of The Night” from W.A Mozart’s “Magic Flute” exemplify the Classical period. These pieces both exhibit exemplary musical qualities from their respective musical periods, and comparing and contrasting these two works will illuminate the magnificence of each period.…

My favorite is “I Can All Too Well Compare My Lady” by Guillaume de Machaut. This song makes me smile. This is a polyphonic piece, so there are no instruments being played. There are three men singing in French. This is a secular piece that is about a man who is praying to a woman who is like a statue towards the man praying to her. Reviewing the details about this song I realize that it is a sad song. This man loves this woman and he prays to her and she does not answer him. Knowing this now, I find it interesting that just listening to the song makes me smile. This piece is a great one to learn to listen for cadences.…

The time period for the piece is likely during the medieval era. It has one vocal line that is sung primarily by males in free form and free rhythm. The melody of the unknown piece is simple and rather easy to sing because it is not very dynamic. The known piece would have been composed and performed much later than the unknown piece. The unknown piece has a homophonic texture as opposed to the known piece which is polyphonic and much more complicated. The Gregorian chant was generally used during mass or spiritual worship and would be sung in church. The known piece would be performed for an audience and was written as concert music. (2) The timbre of the piece is unique because there are no instruments and the entire piece is performed vocally. During this time there were very few instruments used, especially for Gregorian chants. Sometimes there would be drums used to sustain the tempo and melody of the piece. The mood of the unknown piece is relaxing and mellow. The unknown piece is an entirely different listening experience from that of the known piece. The unknown piece is much shorter and simplistic than the known…

Soon the chorus comes in seeming as though they are muttering the words. They continue to sing the dynamics changing after every phrase is sung. The variety of the changing dynamics continues throughout this first piece, becoming louder and quieter. The tempo and rhythm of the piece was very unified in this piece before any of the soloist began to sing their part. Throughout the performance of the soloists in this piece, the rhythm, tempo, harmony and volume changed drastically multiple times whenever the “idea” ended. The structure of this piece is structured ABAB. The purpose of this composition of a whole was to be used at a funeral for the composer’s friend, Alessandro Manzoni. After this performance, it was not performed in a church again but only in concert halls. The purpose of the concert I attended was to entertain the audience with a story of the music. The melody was played by the musical instruments in this piece and it remained quite constant, only changing in dynamics with the rest of the ensemble. The melody did jump back and forth between the only the instruments, the instruments and chorus and the instruments and soloists. The chorus was the harmony for the majority of the time. They were often the harmonic melody to the soloists, while other times had the melody themselves. The time of this piece was from the…

The conductor interpreted the piece beautifully, very legato; the subtleties between p (piano) to f (forte) were smooth and transition less. Often the conductor would crescendo and decrescendo to bring the dynamics to the music at the right moment intervals. If the use of ff (fortissimo) would have been used, the piece would not have been as smooth or legato.…
