When you hear the word band when related to music, what do you think of? Is it a small group of friends playing in a garage, or a huge group of people putting on a concert at school? Merriam Webster defines a band as “a group of persons, animals, or things; especially: a group of musicians organized for ensemble playing.” To finish out the semester I went to one last concert, the SIUE Wind Symphony and Concert Band. The opening piece of the night Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew by James Curnow. This piece gave the concert a very prominent opening, beginning with trumpets. The sound of trumpets give a feeling of power and royalty when played Allegro and Tenuto. When I first heard this song it reminded me a lot of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major. Both pieces have very powerful trumpet pieces and I truly enjoy them both.

This piece did a great job giving me and the rest of the audience the ability to feel many emotions. When I listened to this song I remembered a scene from one of my favorite movies, Sweet Home Alabama. In this movies the main character Reese Witherspoon and her love interest are on a beach during a lightning storm where they are almost struck by lightning. This piece reminds me of this scene because the storm is played out throughout the song. Starting from the very beginning the band does an excellent job making the sound of the wind. The dark deep tone gives the impression of a storm rolling in with thunder off in the distance. By the end of the song you know the storm will soon be over and everything will be okay again. I believe the band did a fantastic job really giving the audience more than just another
