Unfortunately, on my first day, I was met with the words: “Your mom must be the one with the funny name”. Despite my best efforts, most days continued with the same tone with meaner remarks. I felt out of place and discouraged. Over time, I began to allow these words to bother me and after nearly three years in concert band, I decided to no longer take the course. I had faced other adversities before, but the constant negativity had worn me down. In a moment of weakness, I caved and lost sight of what mattered: my passion and love for music. Every day, I try to listen to a new piece of music. Whether it be a string group, unaccompanied choir, or even a percussion consort, I believe that by doing this, so much can be learned from just listening. About the mid-month of July, I came across this piece of music. I thought it was extremely fun and quirky at the same time! I had continued to listen to it, read some background information on the piece, and do a small amount of study on the work.…

Ta-Ta-Ta-Taaa; Ta-Ta-Ta-Taaa. The famous motif and most iconic piece from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, it was considered as “fate knocking at the door”. The sound of the snare drum made me scared in my mind I thought Please Mr. Zielenski don’t pick me to play the snare… I had known that I could not play the snare drum last year in sixth grade and I wouldn’t even touch one the sound of it was cool, but I could never just get the rhythm right. When I started band I started with a camp over the summer and I was pretty great at playing the quarter notes only. The weeks I tried hard at trying to play the snare, but I constantly did flams (using both sticks and hitting the snare) and I decided that day that I could not possibly play the snare drum. Then this year came around and I decided that it was time to make a change I had to play the snare for band I decided to start with a beginner book and keep going through what I could not play.…

To know that she thought I should even consider quitting made me feel that I had let myself and my teacher down. After that day, I was called to the guidance office to decide if I would stay or leave the band. I was torn on whether to listen to my teacher or myself. As I sat in the guidance office, the counselor gave me two choices: to quit band or to get a tutor and practice until I could catch up with the other students. After deliberating over it and talking with my parents, I decided that I would stay in the band no matter how difficult it might be.…

I've played the clarinet for seven years. When I first started playing the clarinet I was in the sixth grade I wasn't very good. In fact, the only reason I had joined the band was because my friends and I didn't get into the same elective; they'd been forced into band, while I was one of the lucky few who'd gotten into computer science. The thought of being separated from my friends did not sit well with sixth-grade me and that's why, at the beginning of sixth-grade, I found my self sitting in band holding a brand new clarinet. Anyways, sixth-grade flew.…

People and music are inseparable as Macdonald (2008, 39) argues that ‘We are all musical. Every human being has a biological, social and cultural guarantee of musicianship.’ It is hardly possible to live without hearing music in daily life, and people has been building musical identity since they are born by negotiating through it. Thus, music is a significant matter in personal identity and analysis of one’s life can reveal one’s musical identity. I attended the Stones River Chamber Players on February 29th. This was played in the Hilton Music Hall. When I was going in I did not know what to expect because I have never been to a music concert on the MTSU campus. There were around 60-70 people who attended this concert. Most of the individuals who attended were more than likely there for a class because more than half were students who did not understand the concept of staying off of their phone.…
