Concert Analysis: The University Jazz Combos Concert

The University Jazz Combos concert did not focus on formality the way I originally believed it would. Instead of walking into a concert hall to see the performers dressed in black, already set up, and just finishing tuning there was a shocking amount of color, styles of dress, and a flurry of movement. My experience from the last concert lead me to believe that a recital would be just as formal and put together as a symphony performance. In fact, the entire atmosphere of the recital hall was more relaxed than that of an orchestra concert. The overall atmosphere spoke to the type of music presented.

As stated before the concert was not what I was expecting. I enjoyed it more than I believed I would, it certainly isn’t my new favorite type of music, but understanding aspects of it gave me a greater appreciation for the music and the musicians. Things such as a recognizable basso ostinato set by the base player were a familiar starting point. When the soloists needed an accompaniment the bassist varied the continuous rhythm to compliment what the soloist was playing, otherwise, the beat was

Movement was a large part of the performance. The saxophone players didn’t simply sit and play, they walked from one side of the stage to another, moved behind other players, and even seemed to converse while they played. The bassists and drummer even discussed something as they played The Grind. Even the audience was more involved, clapping during the songs and dancing along with the music. Overall, this performance was more inclusive than the previous one I went to. The performance wasn’t classical music, it was jazz, but the smaller group had the same effect that I believed classical chamber music aimed to achieve. I can understand why the popularity of chamber music grew in the classical period. It was easier to connect with the performance when the entire setting felt more

Finally, I can say that experiencing this type of Jazz concert, where it is more of a casual, lounge atmosphere was very interesting due to the fact that the first Jazz concert I attended was in a more professional setting. It was a lot more obvious to me how Jazz does live in the moment, since the band actually did a whole improvised piece and was randomly deciding what they were going to play next. The connection between the band members was also very evident, they had a lot of eye contact and head signals. Last but not least, I am excited about the fact that this jazz session incorporated certain elements of Jazz that we have recently covered in class. For example, the train influence on music pieces.…

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…

I appreciated the effort and music the mariachi group gave in their performance. I noticed how the trumpet usually took the main role while the violins supported the trumpets voice, usually by pizzicato. The guitar and guitarrón were mainly the background music that played the same rhythm over and over. It made me realize the beauty of…

It was very soothing and relaxing to listen to. The music that the group produced was smooth throughout the concert. In the second song, the trumpet player used the technique of covering the hole of the trumpet where the sound comes out of with his hand and it made the trumpet sound similar to the trombone. The music was smooth and slow enough that one could move to it and follow along with it.…

The concert was presented by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Music’s UNC Jazz Band on Saturday, October 10th, 2015. The concert venue was located at UNC Kenan Music Building’s Rehearsal Hall. It started from 8pm to 9.40 pm. Compared to all the other concerts that I have gone to, the UNC Jazz Band concert was a definite change in atmosphere as it was a large band consisted of students. The stage was set up really well and has a nice lighting.…

I was fascinated by the lights because the stage was dim with red lights in the background. However, they were experiencing technical difficulties and the conductor restarted the piece from the beginning. The opening piece was written in forte so the string orchestra was accompanied by a strong percussion section. I was impressed by the violin section and their ability to use their whole bow and draw out beautiful legato notes. I was surprised by the cow bell because it almost didn’t sound like it was part of the music.…

I am so grateful to have been given this as an assignment and going to something that lit up not only my perception of percussion concerts but also my brain. I could tell that this concert was enormously significant to a great deal of people and the performers seemed to have truly worked hard and it was a beautiful experience to notice it all pay off. I have heard plenty of people tell me that I truly ought to go hear some of the music performances that Ithaca College has to offer and I thought they are saying that either because they are involved or they are staff and they are trying to get a more cumbersome audience. But, now I understand that they were genuine and I will now be telling other people exactly what they have been telling me, recommending this percussion ensemble that we have right here on campus. This was the complete opposite of all my expectations of this concert.…

For the final project I decided to attend two piano concerts at the University of Colorado Boulder. The two piano concerts I attended were Hsing-ay Hsu (with Madoka Asari) as part of the Faculty Tuesday Series, and Andrew Ramos’s Doctor of Musical Arts Recital. Both of these recitals were a new experience due to the fact that I had never been to a piano recital at the University of Colorado before. Each piano performance was different, whether it was the music performed or the type of style of concert. Although they illustrated many differences, there were also some similarities in the recitals.…

It was very exciting to see these choirs sing with such passion. I also really liked listening to instruments live. I would rather listen to a pipe organ being played live than on a CD too. I have to say at first i was dreading going to this event because I felt that it was a waste of my time. While at some time the piece they would play would be very entertaining and I could really get into it, other times I really just want it to be over. But I think that going to see jazz was more fitting for me because I could not see myself sitting and watching the whole show of a symphony. Also the fact that I brought company made it much more enjoyable because I feel that when you share a moment or event with people it makes it much more fun. I enjoyed alot of their upbeat songs more , because i like more upbeat song in generally that just the kind of music I listen to.…

But, we decided to stay because It was already late, we were not very hungry and the music and the atmosphere were outstanding. Some people were having drinks and talking with occasional little dances, while others were paying more attention to the musicians. We only enjoyed the last twenty minutes of Lauren’s presentation, but more than enough to appreciate her dedication and the heterogenous and versatile voice she possesses. The small combo of musicians, with her, were very serious about their performances; nevertheless, you could see they were having a good time. The instruments used were piano, electric guitar, cello, and drum.…
