Concept Of Antigone

Decent Essays
My production concept will be formal and follow traditional theatre guidelines. My production communicates my theme in numerous ways. Antigone demonstrates family loyalty when she decides to bury her brother Polyneices. She knew that burying Polyneices was going to result in death, but she still did it. Her sister Ismene did not agree to help her because she knew it was dangerous. Creon in the end is left with no family because he was so loyal to the citizens and the state. As the king of Thebes he had to set an example for the citizens. The theme of my production is relevant to a contemporary audience because love and loyalty still remain issues for individuals. Loyalty is important in marriages and relationships. Love is still a force that

Creon loses all of his surviving family, including his wife, Euripides and his only surviving son, Haimon, but he survives at the end, making it all that much more cruel because he will be haunted by the decisions he made that offended the gods and caused the deaths of those who mattered most to him. This will undoubtedly evoke plenty of pity from the audience, as everyone has family that they care about, and everyone fears losing those who matter most to them. That is why this play and others like it have allowed humans to reflect upon their history, as some human traits such as hubris and love for one’s family, cross generational and cultural…

“But a tyrant says and does what he pleases. That’s his great joy.” (Antigone 506-507) Antigone to Creon said this quote after Antigone was caught for trying to bury her brother Polynices. The quote is very important to the overall story of Antigone because it revolves around the theme of family verse family and also the theme of right verse wrong. Creon is Antigone’s uncle but they don’t necessarily see eye to eye with each other, which is why she calls Creon a tyrant.…

Even though it was prohibited, Antigone decided to disobey the state’s law and give her brother a proper burial. Antigone was not in the wrong to disobey Creon because she had the right to bury her brother and her brother deserved a respectful and proper burial so they could cherish their family. Every person deserves a humble burial. Even though Antigone was committing a crime according to the laws set by the state, to her it was a right thing to do because she was just following the will of the gods. Many people claim that they would do anything for their family, so Antigone revealed that she justly feels the need to cherish her family.…

The protagonist, Creon, experiences a crucial pathos that leads to the catharsis of the people. His scene of suffering can be broken down to the event where he goes to free Antigone from her buried tomb, to find Haemon with her dead, suicidal body causing Haemon to kill himself as well. Not only does Creon suffer the loss of his son in front of his eyes, he later finds out that his wife has also killed herself out of grief, leaving Creon alone and responsible for the deaths that occurred in his family. His inability to compromise between himself and Antigone motivates the killings and defines Creon’s downfall. He recognizes this after the tragic events when he says, “All these deaths I caused in my own family by my stubbornness” (29).…

In the play Antigone, before we even start reading the play, we find out that Antigone’s brothers, polyneices and eteocles, are killed in a battle between two opposing sides fighting for royalty. The play initially starts with Antigone and her sister, Ismene, are fighting, because they heard the decree made by King Creon, their uncle, stating that their brother polyneices could not be buried , because he fought for the opposing side in the war. Creon is the king of Thebes, and he will not stand for anyone going against his decree, so he makes it clear that those who try and go against his rule will be stoned to death. Antigone does not agree with her uncle, so she buries her brother anyways, and that action decided her fate. Antigone is the…

Okonkwo indirectly sacrificed himself for the village by going against the missionaries. Socrates and Antigone vs. the Law The proclivity for people to challenge the law has been a topic of discussion for thousands of years. In Plato’s Crito, Greek Philosopher Socrates explains his point of view on the subject in which he chooses to abide by the law, even if he knows that he will be executed. Antigone, a main character from Sophocles’ play of the same name, contradicts Socrates’ ideas and clarifies her belief that one should rebel against authority according to their own justice.…

What many readers do not understand is that, in every arrogant and harsh individual, there’s a human being that is going through his/her own judgements and make them be who they are with others. In Creon’s character, Creon pretends to be an insensible man in order to have the respect of his servants and son. What he does not realizes is that, because of his pride, he does not only loses the support of his son, but he also loses his son by feeling what it is to seeing his son in a dead body. Not only hi loses his son, he also loses his wife. This is a tremendous lesson learned to a character who at end, ends staying alone without anyone.…

Human nature and politics are inseparable. Raw, overpowering, and mighty, human nature is the dynamic force that drives political discourse. While Sophocles’ Antigone and Thucydides’ On Justice, Power, and Human Nature appear to be simply two independent works of antiquity, both convey timeless teaching on human nature. These interconnected lessons are relevant in modern political leadership and serve as a guide for moderation, justice, and engagement.…

Each of the plays are set in Italy and during the Jacobean era in England playgoers would have viewed Italians as “vengeful, cunning and bloodthirsty.” Both the characters of Volpone and Vindice are corrupted by the end of each play, Volpone is corrupted through greed and Vindice through vengeance. Jonson and Middleton are critiquing corruption in both of these plays and we see this not only from the protagonists but also the other characters such as the men attempting to get Volpone’s will by prostituting his wife, disowning his son. In the Revengers Tragedy, we see the Duke’s family murder each other at the very end of the play, both Jonson and Middeton are critiquing the effects of greed in both of their plays. Each of these characters could never declare victory in achieving their goals…
