Eastern Michigan University Concept Mapping as a Teaching Strategy Nurse educators are challenged with the task of not only providing basic information to their students, but they are also designated the responsibility of teaching their students to critically think. All while being aware of different learning styles and installing self-confidence in their students. Gone are the days of simply lecturing to a group of students and expecting them to absorb all of our wisdom. As instructors, we are now encouraged to develop creative and engaging ways to involve our students in their own education. Goals of including students actively in their learning include better comprehension …show more content…
Results from these studies also provide valuable information as to how to initiate using concept maps so they will be well received and be as valuable as possible to the students (Harrison & Gibbons, 2013).
Article improvements Larger scale studies are needed to validate the experiments results. There is also a need for research that compares the use of concept mapping at various levels of a nurse’s education. More qualitative research is also needed to ensure that concept mapping is introduced and utilized in the most effective way possible. By knowing a student’s perception of a teaching strategy, we are able to learn what will make it a more effective and successful learning tool.
Evidence and My Teaching I personally gained a lot of insight about concept mapping and teaching from these research articles. At first I chose this topic because I wanted to validate a teaching strategy that worked for me. As I read through the research I found there was more I could learn from this …show more content…
They were an effective way for me to learn pathology and recognize the link between seeming unrelated events. Through the evidence presented in these research articles I now understand that when combined with other teaching strategies, concept maps can be effective in improving how a student understands a topic. They can also increase a student’s self-confidence, enjoyment in learning, ability to communicate with others and critical thinking. When created in stages, concept mapping incorporated other teaching strategies and produced meaningful learning for students with differing learning styles. In the research study by Surapaneni and Tekian (2013), stages for concept mapping development were adopted from those originally described by Novak and Canas. The stages were: brainstorming, organizing, layout, linking, revising and finalizing, and gallery walk. Students were divided into groups and worked through each stage together. In this study students indicated that each stage brought about new learning. I plan to incorporate this way of developing concept maps into my teaching. I know, as an instructor, I need to be constantly improving my knowledge. The world of nursing and medicine is constantly evolving. By keeping up with current research, I can incorporate new ideas and information into my classes. I can give students concrete
