Abstract
Aim: To report a concept analysis on communication and nursing.
Background: How a nurse communicates is vital to patient care as well as patient outcome and experience. In today’s world, with so much technology at our fingertips, nurses need to know how to effectively communicate with not only each other, but with other healthcare members and most importantly, how to communicate with patients and family.
Design: Concept analysis.
Data Sources: Information for this concept analysis with be obtained by using CINHAL, EBSCOhost databases (2003-2015), Academic OneFile, as well as academic and library catalogs.
Methods: The Walker and Avant method was used.

We all know that effective communication is important in any profession but for patient safety, it is vital for the well-being of our patients. ”The quality of communication in interactions between healthcare providers and patients has an important influence on outcomes for patients” (O’Hagan, Manias, Elder, Pill, Woodward-Kron, McNamara, Webb, & McColl, 2014). Communication in nursing can occur in various ways. Nurses often communicate to each other through bedside reporting at shift change. They communicate to the patient by using conversation and they communicate with the practitioners either by face to face conversation or telephone conversations. “Given that communication is so important and integral to nursing practice, one could expect nurses to be very good practitioners in the art and science of communication - both written and verbal” (Doncliff, 2015).
Purpose
The purpose of this analysis is to review the importance of effective communication in nursing as well as in pharmacy and medical disciplines.
Methods
This concept analysis on communication in nursing was obtained from research done on CINAHL, Academic OneFile, and EBSCOhost. The eight steps of Walker and Avant was used to create this analysis. Those steps included: selecting a concept, determining the aim for that concept, identifying the uses of the concept, determine the defining attributes, identify model case, identify a related case, identify a contrary case, list antecedants, consequences and the empirical referents (Walker & Avant, 2011).
