Concept Analysis Essay On Hope

This concept analysis paper will clarify the meaning of hope, which is an abstract idea that every human has experienced in his or her lifetime. Eleanor Roosevelt stated that hope is the most important word of the English language (Roosevelt, 1949). Hope has the power to positively impact healing and inspires people to live. During the World War II, a survivor named Victor Frankl was imprisoned in a concentration camp held by the Nazis. This man was able to survive the horrible circumstances with the hope of seeing his family again. The term hope is defined as having a state of optimism that is personally satisfying and supports life (Meyers, 2006). “The Expectation of something desired: desire combined with expectation” as stated in the Oxford English Dictionary. Hope is reflected upon in many different aspects such as religion, healthcare, literature, mythology, and psychology.
The Penguin dictionary states the definition of hope is to “To have faith in the possibility of something or to hope for something when there is virtually no possibility of it” (Hopel, 2007). Hope inspires the cancer patient to continue treatment and installs the belief that the patient will concur the cancer and with treatment the patient will prevail. A patient with hope and a positive outlook have an improved quality of life. Nurses may see family members with false hope when caring for the dying patient, in the last stages of death, as the patient has the moment of lucidity hours prior to death. In labor and delivery, nurses and families see the newborn as the epitome of hope (Katz, 2010, p. 439). Nurses develop hope for their patients and witness hope in patients and families in many different
