They are broken up into different categories at the moment: (1) shall issue to residents only; after statutory requirements are met e.g., Not mentally incompetent or a felon, the state is required to issue a permit (2) shall issue to residents and non-residents (3) may issue to residents only; even if all requirements are met, the state decides eligibility based on factors that have been included in the statute, or in some cases not included (4) may issue to residents and non-residents (5) no CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) permit required (6) right denied (7) and some states honor other states permits because of a reciprocity agreement. There is currently a federal bill put forth to strengthen the right to bear arms by requiring all the states to enact the same concealed carry permit requirements.

This bill would eliminate the current patchwork system that is in place. Giving everyone in every state the same the same guidelines to follow when it comes to concealed carrying. However, there are a lot of issues to be considered when it comes to this bill, it’s not just black and white. There are several organizations that are in favor of enacting this law and even more that are against it. Each side has a large voice and contributes large amounts of money to their causes both privately and federally.
One of the largest opponents of the bill with more than three million members is Everytown For Gun Safety, a known advocate for gun control. Founded in 2006 by former Mayor of NY City Michael Bloomberg, former Mayor of Boston Tom Menino, and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. This group was formed to reduce gun violence across America. They press for change at the federal and state level by backing candidates and legislation. They also raise awareness for issues like guns in schools, access to guns by children, domestic violence, suicide, and other related gun
