“There is no guidebook to success, therefore, we all write our own.” As the Salutatorian of Sacred Heart High School’s Class of 2007, I uttered these words during my speech in hopes of inspiring my classmates. Those words certainly inspired me, as I earned one out of only four Biochemistry degrees awarded in Manhattan College four years later and, thereafter, as I advanced up the corporate ladder in my first job with Conair Corporation. However, these achievements seem minor compared to my accomplishments during my first few months with Shiseido Americas Corporation, which resulted in my fastest promotion to date.
After spending four fruitful years at Conair Corporation, I pursued a new opportunity at my current company, Shiseido Americas Corporation, based in East Windsor, NJ. In March 2016, I became the fourth member of the Regulatory team in charge of providing Regulatory support to the bareMinerals and BUXOM brands. At the time when I joined the company, the brands’ headquarters were located in San Francisco, C A. Therefore, I was the only team member on the East Coast. Unbeknownst to me, major changes within the company were imminent.

I pushed forward to utilize my training to support the business to the best of my ability having only joined the company a few months prior to this transition. I dedicated most of my time to learning the history of the brands from my supervisor, knowing that he would also depart the company after the official closure of the headquarters in March

“Climbing The Golden Arches” is an essay written by Marissa Nuñez published originally in New Youth Connections, republished in The Norton Sampler. The main idea of this essay is that although the road to a successful career is fraught with hardships, it can be overcome with hard work and determination. At the beginning of the essay, Nuñez describes a scene in which she and her cousin went to eat at McDonald’s and decided to try out for a job there out of curiosity. They filed their applications and about a month later had their job interviews in which both passed. The author was initially surprised to receive the job but that turned into happiness when she realized that she no longer would have to depend on her mother for money anymore.…
