“If he were not here with us he would have shot himself long ago” (Remarque 268). Throughout the novel many themes are shown in many ways. Comradeship is shown in the novel when the characters stay together, survive dangers, and make the best of bad situations. An event that shows comradeship by the characters staying together is when Paul and his comrades volunteered to guard a village. When they arrive at the village they relax in a reinforced concrete cellar. “We are just the right people for that; -Kat, Albert, Muller, Tjaden, Detering, our whole gang is there” (Remarque 231). In the scene the characters just helped evacuate civilians then the French began firing motor shot so they ran to safety. "I seize him by the arm and shake him. Up, Albert, if once you lie down you’ll never get any farther. Quick, I’ll hold you up” (Remarque 241). Comradeship is shown when it tells us that Paul will carry Albert to safety if he must. The significance of this is that Paul will not let Albert die if he can do something. The quote expresses the theme of comradeship because it shows that no man will be left behind. The other scene that shows comradeship by surviving dangers is when Paul and everyone around him is being gassed. “I seize the mask, pull it over his head, he understands” (Remarque 68). In this quote Paul is putting a gas mask on a recruit to save his life even though he doesn’t know him. The significance of the quote is that Paul is a good friend to even strangers. This shows comradeship because he cares about others including strangers. The author demonstrated comradeship by them surviving dangers to show how bad situations make friendships

After Paul stabs the soldier who unexpectedly enters the shell hole Paul is in, he instantly regrets the action he has performed. As he watches the man’s life slowly fade away, Paul speaks to the nearly lifeless body and says, “If we threw away these rifles and this uniform you could be my brother just like Kat and Albert” (Remarque 9-10). Paul realizes that what he knows about who his enemy is is all based on the color of the uniform each person is wearing. He uses the word “brother” to describe the inner…

Enrich Maria Remarque’s book ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ features Paul Bäumer, a 20-year old German soldier who represents a whole generation of men that history refers to as the ‘Lost Generation.’ Through his character, the author tells a story of men who were destroyed by what is referred to as ‘The Great War.’ For instance, in chapter 2, Paul attempts to describe the difference between his generation and that of the older soldiers and notes that the older soldiers had a life before the war that they felt comfortable and secure (Remarque, 2004). On the contrary, Paul’s Generation did not get a chance to experience that life (Van Kirk, 2011, p. 72). From the start of the story, the life of Paul is dominated by death, horror, suffering, fear, and hopelessness.…
