The Puzzle Of Computer Science Philosophy

A major in Computer Science has always been what I have wanted to achieve. My brain is constantly in a state of self imposed hyperactivity. I have excelled

in creating new puzzles in order for my brain to get its daily dose of

adrenaline. However the adrenaline rush i got from my first puzzle would last

much longer than expected, becoming my own personal stalker.

When I first got asked the question such as every other child is, what do you

want to be when you grow up? I excitedly declared that I aspired to become a

puzzle solver while ranting to my teacher and peers about the latest puzzle I

had solved. This however was followed by my teacher rejecting my idea on the

basis that there

During the following time period, when I confronted the idea of my

possible future ideal job being just a myth off my imagination, I however

became acutely aware of all the puzzles that people stumbled upon daily and a

spark was rekindled.

My teachers would often preach during math class not to ask questions on why

equations were done in certain manners, ''Just do it the way it is meant to be

done and you will pass the test next week." Why was that equation the one that

was universally followed? If we didn't question the make of the model then how

could we know if there was a more efficient method? I marveled at the abstract

phenomenon in the world's job list and the empty slot that remained when it

concerned a professional puzzle solver, a job that would specialize in solving

puzzles that were creating so many problems. Eventually these puzzles evolved

during my math class into techniques that could be implemented as a solution to

faulty calculator programming errors. In science the question became, how could

we create a program with the capabilities to predict the structure of a

protein, only through the amino acid sequence? Inevitably I found that these

puzzles were not as innocent as they seemed and was forced to confront the

If most of our life's decisions were influenced by the

technology that assisted us through a series of programs and software, then how

easier could we make this, while also seeing how much harder we could make it

for people to steal personal information through technology?

For one of our class projects we created a secure solar powered bench, with a

Wi-Fi hotspot that would allow people to charge their phones, while gaining a

safe internet connection. For another school project I created a fake Wi-Fi

hotspot at a local Starbucks in order to see how easy it would be to steal

people's information. This Starbucks would be my playpen for a whole week and

the customers would be my experimental mice. By the end of the trial

experiment, 65% of the customers who came into Starbucks, established a

connection with the fake Wi-Fi server. Security warnings, that were provided by

apps and security protections remained neglected, facilitating the flow of

personal information. I was able to see their unencrypted data, any information

that was sent through i was able to see.

As a part of the Alamo academies we had to partake in a summer internship

“Who do you want to be when you grow up?” Every young adult has been asked this question. This is a question that weighs more and more on you the older you get, and will never go away until you are that person. Sometimes, that person changes. It happened to Dr. Rachel Pearson.…

Unlike many of those who enter into Computer Science programs in college I have only recently, in the last couple of years, started programming. During my senior year of high school a friend of mine and myself started playing around with C++ for fun during a vocational networking class accomplishing very little and not getting any desired results. At that time I had no clue that a couple short years later I would have a deeper understanding of proper programming methodologies and an understanding of a variety of languages to meet specific needs. It is often that you will see, or at least I have seen, when speaking to others programmers, that programmers believe that their language of choice is the language that will solve every problem that…

Why Hopkins? I knew this conversation well, but each time it was marginally varied. Today the aroma of popcorn wafted my way as I sat at a table in Target. “We are moving to Baltimore this summer,” my dad said. Thus began another relocation experience, one that continued to foster my diverse interests.…

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

Even when I was young, I knew that I wanted to go into a career that would help people overcome any challenges they may face. However, it wasn't until my junior year AP Psychology class when I discovered a career possibility of neuroscience. The class was required to research psychology-related careers, and that is where I delved into a deep hole of neuropsychology discoveries, education requirements, responsibilities, etc. This research showed me that I truly love neuropsychology and how they can help people overcome their personal struggles, whether mental or physical.…

A Modest Proposal, for preventing police brutality in America. It is a sad subject to those who travel through this in country, when they see the streets, the roads, and fronts of stores, crowded with the victims of police brutality, African American males, beaten and killed for no reason. These African Americans, instead of being able to make a living selling cigarettes on the street, are being subjected to police harassment and brutality, and their children grow up without a father, turning to thievery and crime, instead of going to school to get an education.…

Last year I was solely set on majoring in computer science and being a programmer for a living and making millions while working at home by creating genius apps that would change the world. It sounded like the perfect plan because it would incorporate my love for technology and my creativity into a career that would not have me staring at four walls everyday questioning why I chose this job. The future is frightening, without a taste of what computer programming is, how am I supposed to know if that is the right fit for the rest of my life? While researching this particular major, I stumbled upon an event that sparked my interest hosted by Rutgers University in New Jersey-- HackRU. HackRU is a hackathon where groups of students from all over…

In the essay, “How Computers Change the Way We Think”, written by Sherry Turkle, begins by explaining her first experience on how PCs change the way we think. Turkle, a Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, talks about the move from slide guidelines to calculators and how it was troublesome for that move for college students. Turkle proceeds on and discusses how technology gives individuals another approach to consider knowing and understanding. Likewise, Turkle concentrates on privacy and how middle-school and high-school students have a tendency to give out personal information without any safeguard. In the essay, Turkle discusses some computer programs that are being created…

When I was little, I wanted to be a chemist. I imagined myself in the lab coat and with goggles on, carefully pouring electric blue liquids and jade green foam back and forth into various containers, until something had exploded and I had discovered the best way to make flowers the size of people. As I grew up, I lost this fantasy, but I gained more knowledge on how I wanted to influence the world. Funnily enough, I discovered what I really wanted to do when I started working at Chick-fil-A during the summer before my sophomore year. All of my friends had warned me against working in fast food, quoting horrible smells and ridiculous customers and tons of grease.…
