A population of generally well-trained and active people will do wonders for our general health and allow for a stronger, more vibrant nation that utilizes the potential and experience of its citizenry. Public service creates a channel by which Americans of all educational vocations and backgrounds can unite behind a common goal and building a strong America for the future. This has and will surely lead to a diminishing of class conflict and a promotion of diversity. A collective subordination to a ‘greater good’, that is a collective establishment of duty regardless of anything, would do wonders for the problems explained above.
Another important part of the maintaining of a healthy society is the promotion and reinforcement of nationalism and patriotism - that is loyalty to one’s country and people. Such altruistic qualities should be promoted in a moral society.
Verde Magazine compiled quotes from interviews that took place in countries with compulsory military service, and these included the following: “Antti Kokkinen, a 47-year-old Finnish citizen who served in Finland’s compulsory military and often travels to the United States for work, emphasizes how compulsory service can increase patriotism.
“I went into my military service patriotic, but came back even more patriotic,” Kokkinen says.”
This testimony is extremely valuable because of the first-hand account of how military service can create a better and more cooperative society. Even in a pacifistic nation like Finland, compulsory service is helping to build a better future for the people
