Sensory Integration Therapies are used by occupational therapist in treating children with behavioral and developmental disorders including ADHD. These therapies are believed to organize the sensory system by providing vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile and auditory inputs. A child with ADHD may have impairments responding to sensory stimuli such as detection, interpretation of stimuli and modulation. In addition, more than 2/3 of the clinical samples of these children with ADHD may have one co-morbid psychiatric disorder, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Moreover, when there is a higher level of sensory deficits in ADHD, there is also a higher level of delinquency and aggression. This statement supports that a treatment plan of sensory integration therapy alone is not an effective intervention and management of co-morbid psychiatric problems should be addressed as part of therapy for children with ADHD. In addition, parents should also be educated about the behavioral and sensory processing problems that presents with the co-morbidity of ADHD. It is best to not use sensory processing disorder as the main diagnosis, as when these symptoms present, other developmental disorders must also be considered and evaluated
