Argumentative Essay: Should Students Have Passing Grades?

The debate of students having to be required to have passing grades is a very difficult one to address either as the student, parent or teacher. I am not here saying that students should not be in sports while attending grade school. But if they are going to play sports, they should also have a grade point average of 2.0 and above to ensure that they don’t lose focus of school academics. First you would need to ask your self what’s the plan you and your child have set for them during and after they are out of high school. If you have a talented child that you believe has a chance to have a career in sports. As a parent, you would tell them to follow their dreams. Now look into what schools or coaches want out of student athletes. Also ask yourself is student guaranteed to a set place in a team. You child is a decent player but, now good enough for an athletic scholarship. Stegal (2012) research found by Steagal stated “Student athletes with a vision of receiving a scholarship and moving onto the next level to play in college will be held to higher standards starting in 2016. The NCAA will be raising their minimum GPA for incoming athletes From 2.0 to 2.3 at this time (Valdez, 2012).” What then, you have allowed your child to focus entirely on athletic performance instead of his academic performance.
