Comprehension Skills In Fahrenheit 451

My good comprehension skills would make me a good candidate for Honors English. Strong comprehension skills have been very helpful for me because I am able to focus on making deeper connections to the text. These connections can include imagery and symbolism. It can also help identify themes or motifs. Last semester in Mr. Burks English class, we were given a project about Fahrenheit 451. We were given a “seed”, a social issue or aspect of America’s society, and expected to expand on the seed. My partner and I were ready to investigate the way our seed, the rules and morals of society, was shown in the lives of characters in Fahrenheit 451 and lives of people now in the United States. We presented our project in class and ended up doing well …show more content…
I work really hard on the bi-weekly vocabulary quizzes because it is another way to work on expanding my vocabulary. I like to learn the meanings of the vocabulary but also try to use them in everyday conversations. This helps me remember the new words that we focus on in class. I like to challenge myself outside of class and read more challenging novels in order to learn new words that have maybe never shown up in novels that are intended for younger high school students. The American College Test is also a motivator to further my vocabulary. This test is very important for getting into college and improving my vocabulary could increase my test score dramatically. If accepted into Honors English, I would also like to work on my writing skills. In a regular English class, my writing skills have earned me acceptable grades for my essays, but there is room for improvement. I hold myself to a higher standard. I wish to get more practice now so when I am in college this can be automatic. This will save time and allow me to focus on learning the material more than how to effectively write a paper. Writing essays more often will help me with both of my goal areas. It will allow me to get feedback on my writing from teachers. This may be the most important so I can adapt my writing to please teachers and later professors. While writing papers I can also explore using the new vocabulary that I have learned. I am ready for more challenges in my English class and Honors English is a new challenge that I am excited to take on if the

In the novel Fahrenheit 451, people are encouraged to be “whistleblowers” and to tattle on those who do not conform to society and ideals. I believe that this is an accurate description of the society in which we live today and whole-heartedly agree with Bradbury’s views of what society will become if we continue on this path. I think that Bradbury included the aspect of society in which people are encouraged to be mindlessly happy because that is the direction in which he saw society turning, and he wished to express his opinions on what our society would become if we continued on this path to what we thought would be a perfect utopia, but in all reality it is simply a well-disguised form of dystopia and misery, in which no one could ever…

MOTIF: MIRRORs There are references throughout the novel made on mirrors to emphasise the need for people to discover one’s true feelings and to become self-aware. Montag states that he believed Clarisse was just like a mirror as it was after meeting her and seeing himself in her eyes, that he was able to realize he was not happy, that he was actually alone, empty and lost in a meaningless society. Reflections of himself through his wife and the other firemen makes him realise just how shallow everyone is and how oblivious they are to their own unhappiness. Emphasise the need for society to re-evaluate at itself and change MOTIFS: PARADOXES Bradbury repeatedly uses many paradoxical statements—which are used to tell us that without real thinking, we are alive but are we really living.…

Since all events and actions are set in motion by past events, Montag is not responsible for his murderous and destructive actions; but being that Montag has a sense of freedom he is responsible for how he went about doing those actions. An event or action is caused by another event or action that comes before it. A prime example of this is shown is the quotation “A new Mechanical Hound has been brought from another district.”…

A model firefighter, who loved his job, and had a fascination for burning, these are all things that can help describe Guy Montag's personality. He wore the phoenix proudly on his chest with the number 451 on his helmet, until one day it all changed. In the beginning Montag believed what he was doing was right because in society's eyes it was, but as he met new people his beliefs started to change. The thoughts and mindset of other individuals help shape Montag into the man he becomes. He starts out as a model citizen who plays by the rules and changes into a strong willed man who sticks by his beliefs.…

Guy Montag surroundings in the novel Fahrenheit 451 affect the character in ways which he questions, rebels and seeks a better way of life in this dystopian civilization he lives in; therefore illuminates the theme of knowledge versus ignorance. Which influences his life as much as fate, destiny or any supernatural agency as Pauline Hopkins says. Society’s ways are different, firemen do not put out fires but they cause them by burning books and then fill new books up with false information. Examples would be where it reads, “Established in 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the colonies. First Fireman: Benjamin Franklin.”…

Particular objects and figures being represented in forms misconceptions inevitably contribute to specific parties exercising greater authority over others due to the reinforcement of inaccurate perceptions which can indirectly bestow more power upon those who are reinforcing these ideas. In Animal Farm, a pig named Squealer, who is also a persuasive orator, manipulates the animals into accepting their lies: “He [Napoleon] had seemed to oppose the windmill, simply as a manoeuvre to get rid of Snowball, who was a dangerous character and a bad influence” (Orwell 18). It can be noted throughout the story that Squealer uses certain individuals to blame liabilities on, specifically Snowball. Squealer intentionally characterizes Snowball as a poor influence, utilizing him as a scapegoat for any events in where there is a discrepancy such as the…

Owning books in Fahrenheit 451 is illegal, it lets people become free of thought to the other world. The day to day life of today’s society is to sit and watch television all day long, not only at home, even while the kids are at school. Guy Montag is a firemen that start fires instead of putting them out, “spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world”, burning books and the houses that hold them. Firemen will watch you if there are any red flags showing that you are hiding books. Ray Bradbury is accusing modern society of so much censorship that they are losing the value of reading books and free-thinking, going by a day to day routine, not changing anything they do because that’s what everyone was doing,Ray Bradbury doesn’t want to be forgotten so easily.…

I learned that using the same old, boring, words were going to get me nowhere in life. Accelerated English 4 had inserted a few new words into my vocabulary, though not many at all. It helped me to learn the meanings of words faster along with their respective origins.…

As the firemen arrive in front of Montag’s house, lights in houses down the street flicker on to watch the carnival. Just as the firemen rush towards his house, Mille, who turned him in, rushes out and gets in a taxi without saying a word to Montag. Beatty chides Guy Montag for thinking he could keep the books concealed and asks why he didn’t turn the books in, saying, “didn’t I hint enough when I sent the hound around your place (page 107).” As Beatty continues his lecture, Faber speaks to Montag with the use of the green bullet, and asks what is going on and urging Montag to run away. However, Montag explains he is trapped, and any attempt to escape would send the Mechanical Hound after him.…
