Standard English is a dialect of English used by the majority of people including those in political, educational and media positions (Fellows & Oakley, 2014, p. 40). Standard English can disadvantage some English users who have their own English dialect (Board of Studies, Teaching & Educational Standards NSW (BOSTES), 2014, para. 2; Emmitt, 2010, p. 58). Most people do not speak Standard Australian English as their everyday language. Differing language styles label users, and those who do not use standard language are often made to feel inferior (Emmitt, 2010, p. 57). The aspect of Standard English is often associated with politics and social class (BOSTES, 2014, para. 4-6). Another version of the standard language is Academic English. It allows people to belong to a particular group which can exclude others from it (Emmitt, 2010, p. 50). Language is an essential function learned from before birth. During pregnancy, the patterns, rhythms and other language qualities are filtered through the womb and heard by the child (Karmiloff & Karmiloff-Smith, 2009, p. 1). Children, therefore, have been pre-exposed to the language before they can speak themselves. However, the learning of language continues into adulthood (Karmiloff & Karmiloff- Smith, 2009, p. 3). As children move through life, their understanding of language increases and they gain more formal ways to communicate such as using body language and correct syntax. Language knowledge changes from a basic understanding to a more refined version (Karmiloff & Karmiloff- Smith, 2009, p. 3). Language has been discovered to serve needs. Research has shown that there are seven different functions of language for young children (Halliday as cited in Fellows & Oakley, 2014, p. 29). The first is the instrumental function, used for giving opinions (Fellows & Oakley, 2014, p. 29). The second is the regulatory function, used with others people 's behavior (Fellows & Oakley, 2014, p. 29). The third is the interactional function, used when interacting with other people (Fellows & Oakley, 2014, p. 29). The fourth is the personal function, used for self-expression (Fellows & Oakley, 2014, p. 29). The fifth is the
